Founded in 2011, Smart Pups has placed over 330 assistance dogs with special need sand are the only organisation in Australia that trains assistance dogs for children only . Smart Pups specialise in training for children with Autism, Epilepsy, Diabetes, and mobility conditions and rely solely on donations, fundraising and grant applications to fund training, kennel facility & staff. Each Smart Pup costs $50,000 to train from birth to time of placement with a family. This covers kennel costs, well-being, vet fees, trainer wages, travel training, equipment, jackets and food. It takes between 12-18mths to fully train a Smart Pup and it’s not until they are around 6 mths old that it is known if they will be better suited for an autism or medical client based on their reponses to different environments.. The impact of a Smart Pup is remarkable, as they boost a child’s confidence, enhance vocabulary, reduce anxiety, prevent meltdowns, improve sleep patterns, and alert guardians to seizure and diabetic concerns.
